Are you wondering how Lumoral works or do you have questions about its suitability? Check out our frequently asked questions below.
If you can't find the answer to your question, we'll be happy to answer them at contact@koitehealth.com.
How often should I use Lumoral?
A) If your mouth is healthy
Use Lumoral every four days, 10 minutes per day. Lumoral can also be used more often if you want to ensure a clean mouth. The device is completely safe to use.
B) If you have a symptomatic mouth, such as with gingivitis
Use Lumoral daily, 1-2 times, for two weeks. If symptoms persist, we recommend scheduling an appointment with your dentist. While Lumoral can be used for less than 10 minutes, optimal results are achieved with a 10-minute session. During treatment, you’re free to watch TV, read, meditate, or even walk, as it doesn’t require you to remain stationary. If you choose to move around, simply place the power supply in your pocket.
If you relax so deeply that you fall asleep, the device will automatically switch off after 10 minutes of use.
How do I clean the Lumoral device mouthpiece?
The mouthpiece can be cleaned with running water and dishwashing liquid and can be safely submerged.
However, be careful not to get the power switch on the cord wet; occasional splashes are fine.
After cleaning, you can lightly dry the mouthpiece with a tissue or let it air dry on a towel. We recommend cleaning it after each use.
What should I do if the mouthpiece does not fit my teeth perfectly?
The mouthpiece does not need to fit perfectly on the teeth; it simply acts as a light applicator. Hold the Lumoral mouthpiece gently in your mouth without biting down, as it does not mold to your teeth.
Biting or applying mechanical stress may damage the surface or lead to premature LED failure.
What happens if I bite the Lumoral mouthpiece?
Once the Lumoral mouthpiece is in your mouth, relax your jaw and try to avoid chewing. Lumoral should not be bitten. Mechanical stress can damage the surface of the mouthpiece and lead to LED breakage. Do not use the product if there is any damage to the surface of the mouthpiece. Please contact us at contact@koitehealth.com if you have any questions.
Lumoral feels hot, is that normal?
It's normal. Heat is part of the treatment effect. When dye meets light, heat energy is generated, which is harmful to bacteria. It is often felt more strongly at the beginning of the application. Heat is often particularly strong when there is more plaque. Regular use of Lumoral will reduce the amount of plaque.
My Lumoral will not start and its control unit light is flashing. What should I do?
Switch on the mouthpiece lights by connecting the mouthpiece cord to the power supply - just before use.
Press the round button on the cord.
Do not press the button on the power bank. If you do, the power supply will start measuring its own capacity, instead of supplying power to the mouthpiece LEDs.
If you have any problems turning on the device, first try reconnecting the mouthpiece cord to the power supply. Also make sure that the plug is properly connected to the power supply.
What is Lumorinse?
Lumorinse is a mild tasting mouthrinse made from water-soluble tablets.
Swishing Lumorinse in the mouth is the first phase of Lumoral treatment.
Lumorinse is an essential part of the Lumoral treatment, as the antibacterial effect is achieved through the combination of light and the active ingredient in Lumorinse.
The active ingredient in Lumorinse is a light-sensitive dye that adheres to the surface of plaque on the tooth. The indocyanine green (ICG) molecule is a safe molecule that is not absorbed in the digestive tract. If you accidentally swallow some rinse, you do not need to worry.
The Lumoral starter pack contains 10 Lumorinse tablets. The tablets are also sold separately in packs of 10 and 30.
The ICG in Lumorinse is water-soluble, so it does not stain the teeth and is washed out of the mouth during brushing. However, if you notice that there is a green colour on the gum line or the surface of the tongue, you can brush your teeth again or clean your tongue, for example with a tongue scraper.
Do I need to charge the power supply before using it for the first time?
When you receive the starter kit, the power supply has enough power for several uses. When fully charged, the power supply will last for up to 10-15 uses, depending on the frequency of use of the device. The power supply is charged using the charging cable that comes with the starter kit, inside the mouthpiece kit, which can be plugged into your mobile phone charger, for example.
Is Lumoral safe to use?
Lumoral is a scientifically proven medical device recommended by dentists for the prevention and treatment of oral and dental diseases. The antibacterial method that forms the basis of Lumoral treatment is widely used in dentistry and medicine. Lumoral is the first device to bring this antibacterial approach into the home. The efficacy of this method has been evaluated using the same standards as those applied to antibiotics.
The requirements for medical devices are defined in the European Union Medical Device Regulation (EU 2017/745). The efficacy, effectiveness and safety of such devices are always verified by a third party. The process is demanding, and Lumoral meets these requirements. Please note that the benefits of Lumoral treatment are based on its regular use as part of careful oral hygiene. So please brush your teeth thoroughly morning and evening and clean your interdental spaces daily.
Why is brushing and flossing not enough?
Residual plaque remains on teeth even after careful brushing. Residual plaque irritates the gums and causes most dental and oral problems, contributing to tooth decay, tartar formation and gingivitis. Lumoral inactivates plaque bacteria, making it easier to remove. Using Lumoral removes over 99.99% of the bacteria that you cannot reach with a toothbrush or dental floss.
If left untreated, dental and gum diseases have been shown to put people at risk of up to 200 common diseases, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and rheumatism. Preventing and treating these problems is therefore of paramount importance.
Lumoral helps prevent and treat oral and dental disease as part of a careful dental care routine.
Will Lumoral whiten my teeth?
Lumoral brings out the natural shade of your teeth and prevents staining. It also helps to remove stains that have already formed, especially when they are caused by residual plaque attached to the teeth or by colour-producing bacterial species. Remember that Lumoral is not a whitening device, but is intended to treat and maintain oral health.
If you are interested in whitening your teeth, we recommend that you consult an oral health professional - they will be able to assess whether your teeth can be whitened and will know how to do it safely. Before any whitening procedure, your mouth should be healthy and your teeth should be completely clean. This is where Lumoral can help you.

Suitability
What if the Lumoral mouthpiece does not fit in my mouth?
If you find that, for some reason, the mouthpiece does not fit in your mouth perfectly, do not worry. The mouthpiece's job is to dispense light, and even if it does not fit perfectly in your mouth, the light is powerful enough. However, please note that the device should not be bitten, but should be placed gently in your mouth.
If you feel that the mouthpiece is completely unsuitable and you cannot use it, our products have a 30-day return policy.
Please contact us at contact@koitehealth.com if you notice any issues with the device you received.
I am pregnant. Can I use Lumoral?
Lumoral is safe to use during pregnancy. Changes in hormonal activity during pregnancy also affect the oral health of the expectant mother. Teeth are more susceptible to decay during pregnancy, and the risk of gingivitis increases. It is particularly important for expectant mothers to maintain effective tooth and interdental cleaning habits to maintain overall oral health. Deficiencies in oral health during pregnancy can significantly harm the unborn child, making proper dental care essential for the mother-to-be.
I have an orthodontic appliance. Can I use Lumoral?
Lumoral is also suitable for use during orthodontic treatment. If you have a fixed orthodontic appliance in your mouth, cleaning your teeth is more challenging than usual. The risk of tooth decay and gum disease is increased as plaque easily builds up around the orthodontic appliances and is difficult to remove with sufficient precision using a toothbrush and floss alone. Lumoral effectively inactivates plaque-forming bacteria without affecting the normal oral flora. Inactivated bacteria are easier to remove around the orthodontic appliances by brushing and flossing.
I have diabetes. Can I use Lumoral?
Lumoral treatment offers diabetics an effective way to take care of their dental hygiene at home. Diabetics are about three times more likely to develop gum disease. There is also a two-way effect between gum disease and diabetes, with diabetes increasing the risk of developing gum disease and long-term gingivitis impairing blood sugar regulation. It is therefore very important for people with diabetes to take care of their oral health.
Lumoral targets a powerful antibacterial effect on dental plaque and gum pathogens, thereby eliminating harmful bacteria. The antibacterial effect of the treatment is more effective than chlorhexidine mouthwashes and it is suitable for continuous use as it does not build up bacterial resistance.
I have a dental implant. Is Lumoral suitable for me?
Lumoral is suitable for use with a variety of dental implant and bridge solutions. With proper care, a dental implant can last a lifetime. However, bacteria can easily infect the tissue surrounding the implant, making enhanced oral hygiene essential for maintaining the implant. It is important to prevent infections.
The effect of Lumoral has been studied in the treatment of inflammation of the tissue surrounding implants with excellent results. Several further studies at different stages of implant treatment are ongoing at universities in both Finland and Sweden.
Safety
Is Lumoral treatment safe?
Lumoral is a proven medical device for the prevention and treatment of oral and dental diseases. The technology behind Lumoral is widely used in dentistry and medicine. Lumoral is the first device to bring this antibacterial method into the home. The efficacy of this method has been evaluated using the same standards applied to antibiotics.
The Lumoral device and the Lumorinse mouthwash have been carefully developed through years of laboratory work and high-quality clinical research. Together they form a medical device and are CE marked. The CE mark on the product is proof that the manufacturer of the product declares that the product meets the requirements of the relevant EU directives, such as safety, health and environmental requirements.
Please note that the benefits of Lumoral treatment are based on regular use as part of a careful oral hygiene regime. So please brush your teeth thoroughly morning and evening and clean your interdental spaces daily.
What is Lumoral's effectiveness based on?
Lumoral treatment is based on a photodynamic phenomenon and its antibacterial effect. In medical applications, this combination of light and photosensitizer is called photodynamic therapy (PDT).
Photodynamic therapy has been widely studied in both medicine and dentistry. The method is considered to be very safe and has a wide range of medical applications. Of particular interest in dentistry is the ability of antibacterial photodynamic therapy to target bacteria in dental plaque.
The effectiveness of Lumoral therapy is based on the active ingredient in Lumorinse, a photosensitive substance that adheres to the surface of dental plaque. When exposed to light from the Lumoral device, it produces a targeted antibacterial effect on the plaque. Indocyanine green, used as a dye, is a safe molecule that is not absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and is commonly used intravenously in medical diagnostics, including liver function evaluation.
Using Lumoral feels surprisingly hot. Is that normal?
It is normal. Heat is part of the treatment effect. When dye meets light, heat energy is generated, which is harmful to bacteria. It is often felt more strongly at the beginning of the application. Heat is often particularly strong when there is more plaque. Regular use of Lumoral will reduce the amount of plaque.
What does Lumorinse contain?
The active ingredient in Lumorinse is the indocyanine green dye. Indocyanine green is not absorbed in the digestive tract, so accidentally swallowing Lumorinse poses no harm. In Lumoral treatment, the mouthwash is simply swished in the mouth and spat out.
Lumorinse ingredients: mannitol, xylitol, ascorbic acid, sodium bicarbonate, polyvidone, indocyanine green, magnesium stearate, silica and peppermint flavouring.
Lumoral is a CE-marked medical device. What does it mean?
The Lumoral device and the Lumorinse mouthrinse have been carefully developed through years of laboratory work and high-quality clinical research. Together they form a medical device and are CE marked.
The CE marking on a product is proof that the manufacturer of the product declares that the product meets the requirements of the relevant EU directives, such as safety, health and environmental requirements. The effectiveness and safety of Lumoral treatment is assessed by a third party as part of the medical device approval process. The product has also passed any required inspections.
In Finland, medical devices are supervised by the Finnish Agency for Safety and Development in Medicines (Fimea).
Does Lumoral contain UV light?
Lumoral does not contain any UV light. It produces light at precisely defined wavelengths of red and blue light.
Lumoral's unique LEDs are patented and the device is a CE-marked medical device. Lumoral's dual-light antibacterial therapy was awarded the 2017 Aalto University Innovation Prize.
