Periodontitis, a serious form of gum infection, is an insidious inflammatory disease that has been linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other systemic conditions. In Finland, around one in three adults suffer from periodontal disease, but only an estimated one in ten know about it. Nordic experts in oral health have now joined forces to tackle the major but often overlooked condition.
Europe's largest randomised periodontal study (HOPE-CP) is in its final stages, with the last patients currently being examined. The three-year study has been carried out in collaboration with the University of Helsinki and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. The results of the study will be published at the international EuroPerio 11 event in Vienna on 14 May.
"The preliminary results show that regular antibacterial Lumoral treatment combined with daily use of the Jordan by Wilfa Clean Smile Plus electric toothbrush effectively treats and prevents even hidden forms of gum disease, periodontitis. This is a breakthrough that could change the way periodontal disease is treated worldwide," says Mikko Kylmänen, Clinical Project Manager at Koite Health Ltd.
Lumoral and Jordan by Wilfa - an effective combination for oral health
In the HOPE-CP study, the combination of Lumoral treatment and the Jordan by Wilfa electric toothbrush was examined. It was found that the combination is an effective treatment, especially for patients with periodontitis.
The study showed that Lumoral users experienced significant improvements in oral hygiene, a reduction in gingivitis, and a notable decrease in the number of deep periodontal pockets compared to the control group. The results suggest that Lumoral treatment enhances the effectiveness of current periodontal treatment practices.
"Even when using just the electric toothbrush, improvements were seen in both groups, which confirms the effectiveness of the Jordan by Wilfa electric toothbrush. However, the best results were achieved by those participants who incorporated Lumoral treatment into their daily oral hygiene routine," says Kylmänen.
A common goal - better oral health, better overall health
The Lumoral treatment method was developed by Dr. Tommi Pätilä, a cardiac and organ transplant surgeon who started his research on the effects of oral bacteria on heart patients in 2016. Jordan by Wilfa electric toothbrushes were launched in 2014 with the aim of bringing to market a product with carefully thought-out brushing technology and an extremely long battery life.
"Lumoral and Jordan by Wilfa share a common mission: to improve people's oral health. If your mouth is not in good shape, you can't be healthy. Too many people still suffer from gingivitis and these figures haven't really changed for decades. It's great that we can bring a new solution to make people's everyday lives easier with the goal of ending gingivitis altogether," says Pekka Ruuska, Marketing Director at Koite Health.
"The Lumoral collaboration is a new and very exciting opportunity for both us and the consumer. Over the years it has been great to receive continuous positive feedback from oral care professionals for our product and to see it materialise this time in the form of the HOPE-CP study is another source of pride," says Niko Olkkonen, Key Account Manager at Wilfa.
"When designing products, we always start from the premise that what the device is made for, it does very well. It may sound obvious, but that's not always necessarily the case in our industry. With Jordan by Wilfa electric toothbrushes, one of our goals from the very beginning has been to improve people's oral health, and working with another like-minded innovative player, Lumoral, is a matter of honour for us," Olkkonen continues.
Lumoral's clinically proven, drug-free treatment helps prevent and treat periodontal disease safely at home, along with regular brushing and cleaning of interdental spaces.
Proven effectiveness: 54% of daily Lumoral users achieved a healthy gingival margin (BOP < 10%) compared to only 22% in the control group. Plaque index and gingival pockets were also significantly reduced.
