Satu and Kai Aalto started working at Albin Dental Clinic in Helsinki in 2003. Both graduated from the University of Helsinki in the 1990s, and before Albin they worked in England and studied laser dentistry in Germany. Albin Dental Clinic is not part of a national chain, as the Aaltos' want to decide for themselves how they live and work and keep control of their patients' work. Entrepreneurship is so much in their blood that neither of them has been in paid employment since the 90s.
The Aaltos' interest in Lumoral treatment was sparked almost by accident when some of their patients had spontaneously purchased a Lumoral device and the results were very good. Now they recommend Lumoral to almost all their patients.
The couple's approach to oral health is individualised for each patient - each patient's oral health is assessed and treatment is planned to achieve a sustainable and effective outcome with the minimum number of visits. Their motto is: "We only do things once." While this is not always possible, of course, setting clear goals helps to clarify thoughts and keep things straightforward.
"We get the patient's teeth in order, and we also hope that the patient will do their part. Home care is not always easy, but we do our best to help and monitor progress. We advise patients individually on the best and easiest way to take care of their teeth. And we invite you for regular follow-up visits," says Kai Aalto of Albin Dental Clinic.
Satu Aalto continues that the cooperation with Koite Health Oy, which offers antibacterial Lumoral treatment, supports their goal. They recommend regular use of Lumoral in addition to traditional home care, as the light-activated antibacterial treatment enhances oral self-care and helps to ensure that the treatment results achieved are sustainable.
Introducing Lumoral
In 2023, Albin Dental Clinic introduced Lumoral treatment to complement their extensive range of oral health care. The decision to offer Lumoral treatment to patients came about when the Aalto's saw advertisements for Lumoral and had long been interested in the healing effects of light technology. Theys have been using dental lasers for over 20 years and the principles of how lasers and Lumoral work are in some ways similar.
However, their patients were one step ahead. A few patients had purchased Lumoral on their own and could see the effect after a short period of use. The use of Lumoral reduced the amount of plaque in the mouth and the patients' gums were healthier looking.
"Before we had a chance to learn more about Lumoral, some of our patients had purchased the device themselves and we could immediately see how well it worked! These patients had a clear reduction in plaque and healthy gums. It was amazing, because these patients always had gingivitis, even though they had regular treatment and tried to take care of their teeth as best they could." Satu Aalto says.
Patient feedback has been very positive. There have been several couples, one of whom bought a Lumoral device on the Aaltos' recommendation and soon another came to the practice to get their own!
Satu and Kai Aalto say that they recommend Lumoral treatment especially to patients at increased risk of gingivitis or cavities. Oral health problems are caused by bacteria and Lumoral is even more effective at reducing bacteria than traditional electric toothbrushing and cleaning between teeth. And the less bacteria, the less of these very common oral diseases.
"Lumoral reduces the amount of harmful oral bacteria and so it helps prevent common oral diseases. In addition, oral bacteria can spread through the bloodstream to the rest of the body, which can cause other health risks. Therefore, reducing oral bacteria also contributes to overall health," Kai Aalto explains.
Patient feedback on Lumoral has been very positive, the dental specialists praise. Patients with a history of chronic gingivitis, or periodontitis, have noticed that their gums bleed less. And after surgical procedures, wounds have healed better than expected for Lumoral users, as the wound has remained clean despite the wires.
Lumoral is also of particular benefit to patients with fixed or removable dentures, reduced saliva secretion and young people with orthodontic appliances. Cleaning orthodontic appliances is difficult and Lumoral helps with this too. It is very unfortunate if a young person has had fixed orthodontics for several years and after removing the orthodontics they have cavities because they could not clean the orthodontics properly.
"Lumoral is excellent because it does no harm at all. Everyone should use Lumoral because you can keep your teeth and gums healthy." Kai Aalto says.
Outlook for the future
The dentists at Albin Dental Clinic see Lumoral as an important part of the future of oral health care. They hope that other dentists will try Lumoral without prejudice. You can see the effect of Lumoral when you give it to a few patients. This is the invention we have been waiting for and now it is here!
"Lumoral is easy to use and can achieve significant benefits with little effort," Satu Aalto says.
"Lumoral is an excellent invention, but it should also be used! Our important role is to provide our patients with information and guidance on oral health issues. However, maintaining oral health is the responsibility of each patient and requires daily actions on the part of the patient."
